I also have vasomotor rhinitis, weather changes or a drop in barometric pressure cause my symptoms to be worse. Exercise however makes me feel better. If you are gasping for air, you need to see a doctor ASAP, you need to be checked thoroughly to see if you have asthma.
Please seek immediate medical attention and go to the ER if you are gasping for air. Out of shape or not, that is not normal.
Have you told your physician that this happens when you exercise. You may have exercised induced asthma. Do you hear yourself wheezing. Does it start you coughing (barking) for a little while during your exercise.

allergies and asthma go hand and hand
The only way to really tell is a pulmonary function test and possibly an exercise test.

Cosmic45’s answer is right on the money. Asthma can be life threatening if not treated properly. Get to a doctor asap.
