It could be pneumonia, particularly if the mucus is thick & gray or green. Since it has been going on for several weeks, I recommend you CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR immediately or first thing in the morning if this is nighttime for you. If you smoke, you should be having annual chest x-rays.
Sounds like pnuemonia – I suffered from that myself last year. It can become very painful, very rapidly. See your GP as a matter of some urgency as the disease can be fatal in some instances.
