Inez Pederson

There are plenty of dogs that are okay for allergy sufferers, but does dad really want to chance it?

You're going to have to go for a purebred dog that was responsibly bred - that means more money, in the thousand dollar range in some cases. Adopting a mixed breed dog or buying from random breeders increase the chance of the dog not being good for dad. Mixed breeds you can never tall if they'll shed or not, and if the person breeding the dog has no clue what their doing... well.... need i go on?

Dad's also going to have to spend time with whatever breed you decide on. That means visits to the breeder to play with the pups AND with the adult dogs to see if he has any reactions. He'll need to go multiple times for long lengths of times to determine any reaction. And even then, he may react once you bring the dog home (occasionally, prolonged exposure to allergens can create a problem.)

If dad doesn't want to chance it, then don't force him to. It's his body and he is at risk - severe attacks can cause death or permanent damage. Listen to him.

Add - it's true that some breeds will cause a reaction while others won't. It's different for everybody. Which is why i suggest having dad spend some time with a litter from a reputable breeder.

Stella Thurmond

All dogs shed. [MY miniature schnauzer/ shih tzu does so don't tell me those breeds don't shed] DOgs with curly hair don't SEEM to shed but they actually do. THe reason for this is b/c their dead hairs get caught into their outer curly hair so it won't fall out.........MY dad is HIGHLY all ergic too. Our dog doesn't cause him any problems although yorkies, malteses, and pekingese do. I don't know why though. My dad went over to my cousin's house one day....[they have a yorkie and maltese] and he was sneezing all over the place. Not to mention his runny nose, itching, it was hectic.

There are a few breeds good for allergy sufferers. Of course, you have the poodles. But you also have Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Schnauzers, Portuguese Water Dogs (I own two of these) and the Bichon Frise.
